  14. So, as you can see from the header, I am making the change

  28. Version 1.03 corrects an error in the address in version 1.02.
  29. I have also reflected that the "F" modem setting includes both
  30. V.Fast and V.34.

  33.                    LIST KEEPERS TAKE NOTE
  34.  
  35. Recently, I have been considering ways to make the USBBS list more
  36. accurate and easy to update.  I know that there are thousands of
  37. BBS lists being kept out there.  Many of the local list keepers
  38. verify BBS's continued existence.  Something that I feel is one
  39. of the shortcomings of any list.
  40.  
  41. The proposal is to create an easy way for listkeepers to reformat
  42. their lists for submission to the USBBS national BBS list each
  43. month.  This has the advantage of gaining national exposure for
  44. the boards on the list and gives our national readers exposure
  45. to more BBS systems.
  46.  
  47. The boards on the list would have to meet the minimum requirements
  48. for posting to USBBS.  Thus, the listkeeper would have to collect
  49. the basic information, at a minimum.  This information includes:
  50.  
  51.     - Phone number including area code
  52.     - City, State
  53.     - Sysop's REAL Name
  54.     - BBS Software
  55.     - Modem Speed and type
  56.     - BBS Name
  57.     - Disk Space devoted to the BBS
  58.     - Number of nodes (phone lines)
  59.  
  60. I would provide, as my part of the process, a free formatting
  61. program which would format from a text version of the local list
  62. to the submission format for USBBS.  The edition field on the USBBS
  63. list would contain an indication of the source list from which
  64. the information was taken.  A list of listkeepers would be
  65. provided along with the other information in the USBBSxxx.ZIP.
  66.  
  67. More details would have to be worked out, but, I think this idea
  68. has some potential -- especially in getting BBS's deleted from
  69. the list when they are down.  Tell me what you think.

  71. As you can see from edition 129, I have made arrangements with
  72. the first of the local listkeepers.  This listkeeper decided to
  73. format the entries since he already had the software to do so.

  76.                   USBBS DOWNLOADS AT BOBSBBS
  77.  
  78. BOBsBBS supports a set of special ID's which are for downloading
  79. the USBBS list ONLY.  Here they are:
  80.

  82. USBBS ZMODEM        Zmodem
  83. USBBS YMODEM        Ymodem
  84. USBBS XMODEM        Xmodem-Checksum
  85. USBBS CRC           Xmodem-CRC
  86. USBBS Xmodem1k      Xmodem-1K

  88. These ID's have no passwords and go through a special script
  89. which starts the download immediately after logon.  To help
  90. you automate your downloads, here are the phrases to wait
  91. for and the responses to enter:
  92.  
  93. WAIT FOR                      ENTER
  94. Graphics                      <Enter>
  95. LAST name                     {id};;
  96. Protocol starts immediately   start protocol download
  97.                               
  98. Wait approximately 1 second after detecting each phrase.

  100. Notice that there is a set of two semi-colons (";;") after
  101. the {id}.  This by-passes the password prompt.  You MUST
  102. enter this or you will get the "PASSWORD" prompt.  For
  103. example, you would enter "USBBS ZMODEM;;" in response to the
  104. "LAST name" prompt.

  106. The connection is terminated immediately after the download
  107. is completed.

  111.              SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE FUTURE
  112.  
  113. The following are some thoughts about the USBBS National BBS
  114. list.  It has been around for a long time in about the same
  115. format.  But the BBSing and communications worlds are
  116. changing rapidly and the list must keep up with those
  117. changes.
  118.

  123. Expiration of BBS's on USBBS
  124.  
  125. One of the major problems I have with the list is finding out when
  126. boards go out of existence.  They do this quite often and without
  127. notice.  I have been toying with the idea of expiring BBS entries if
  128. they are more than ONE YEAR old.  What do you think?

  131.                    RELEASE SCHEDULE
  132.  
  133. This is a release schedule for USBBS for the next several
  134. months.  Unless there is some reason to do so, the list
  135. is released on the last weekend of the month unless the
  136. first of the month is on a weekend.  All revisions for the
  137. list should be in by the Wednesday before the release date
  138. to help assure that I get them.
  139.  
  140. PLEASE NOTE:  Because I do this for free, I reserve the
  141. right to change this schedule without notice.  Notices about
  142. distribution are posted on BOBsBBS (916-929-7511).  Sorry
  143. for any inconvenience this causes.

  145. SYSOPS, please note:  I sometimes have difficulty reaching
  146. the remote update points before the release date.  If the
  147. board is down or constantly busy, I may not be able to
  148. collect the information before the update for that month.
